Jed reach Melrose 7s semi-final
Jed reached the semi-final of Melrose 7s on Saturday and gave the Pro’s of Glasgow warriors an almighty fright before missing out narrowly on a coveted final place.
Jed started the day with a straight forward 22 – 5 win against Heriots in the pre-lim round. Gregor Young scored 3 and Lewis Young scored our other try.
We were against the hugely fancied North West Uni students from South Africa in the first round proper. The students went into a 12 – 0 lead but Gregor Young was on scorching form and gave Jed a 14 – 12 HT lead. Lewis stretched our lead to 21 – 12 with another great try but the students hit back with 2 minutes left but Jed held on for the first big shock of the day.
The twins were at it again in the second round with Gregor 2 and Lewis scoring to give Jed a 19 – 5 HT lead against a very strong Edinburgh Accies side. A messy second half saw us scrape through 19 – 17 to face the Warriors.
The Warriors were not as dominant as last year and Darren Gillespie put Jed in front early on in the Semi. They hit back with 3 tries though to take a 17 – 7 HT lead. Nico Matawalu had been rested all day but was on top form as he denied Lewis with a great last ditch tackle on the try line. Gregor did skin Murray McConnel for another fine try and Lewis broke through at the death but Glasgow’s new signing Glen Bryce stood firm to deny Jed a famous win. FT, 19 – 12 to Glasgow.
Glasgow went on to beat Germany 36 - 21 in the final. Gregor Young was called into the Glasgow squad after Rory Hughes pulled out and it was Gregor who scored Glasgow’s last 2 tries to end up as the tournament’s top scorer with 10 tries.
