Jed lose league opener to Kelso
Jed's league campain got off to a bad start with a narrow 24 - 22 defeat to near neighbours Kelso.
Jed played the first half with a strong breeze in their favour and scored first after Gregor Young broke through from his own half and Lewis was on his shoulder and went in under the scoreboard. Gregor Mein converted. In truth, Jed's try was against the run of play as the Kelso pack was absolutely dominating. Jed were being penalised heavily at the break down and Phil Hume, the Kelso scrum half was taking quick taps to severely test the Jed defence. Kelso scored two converted tries but Jed somehow went into half time only 2 points down as Tony Wichary had scored Jed's second try just before the break.
The second half continued where we left it at the break and Kelso extended their lead with another converted try to go 21 - 12 up. Jed were not down and out though and were starting to string some better phases together through the forwards and sub scrum half Danny Ritchie scored from in the kop corner. The coversion was missed again. The last 20 minutes were Jed's best of the whole game and Kelso were glad to to take a penalty to go 7 points up at 24 - 17. Jed closed the gap again with new stand off Gregor Mein scoring but again the conversion was duffed. Kelso were now hanging on by a thread and Jed were camped in their half and pushing for an unlikely win but alas Jed could not cross the line.
Jed were terrible in the first half and we can't afford to let our guards down in what looks like a really competative league. Hopefully this was a one off and we can take something from the last 20 minutes into next weeks game up at Howe of Fife.
