Match Report
Jed's annual players day swelled the crowd at Riverside and usually helps to swell the Jed boys chests a bit, playing in front of boyhood hero's.
It was Jed who got off to the perfect start with Lewis Young chasing a chip through that was perfectly weighted, he didn't miss the chance to touch down just to the right of the posts. Gregor Mein converted. Mein added a penalty 3 minutes later. Jed's second try was a beauty, Mein chipped over the Marr defence on the halfway line, Harkness was alert and gathered the ball and quickly fed Gregor Young who was too fast for the covering Marr defense and he scored under the posts. Mein converted to give Jed a 17 - 0 lead after a quarter of an hour.
Marr were not sitting in third place in the league by accident and have an excellent coach in Craig (Rip) Redpath and they dominated the rest of the first half. We missed a couple of simple looking tackles and Marr scored 3 tries to take a narrow 19 - 17 halftime lead.
Jed were playing towards the Kelso end now and early play lead to a penalty in the scoreboard corner. Jed kicked for touch to try their luck from the lineout. Scott Raeburn was accurate and hit the middle of the lineout. A quick tap down to the front allowed Jed to get the drive on and Raeburn emerged from the maul with the try. Mein converted from wide out. Jed's next try was an absolute beauty from Gregor Young. Jed collected the restart and shipped it out wide, Gregor threw a dummy just inside his own half and broke the line. He angled back inside and a weak tackle by the covering number 8 allowed Gregor to round the full back and score under the posts. Mein converted to put Jed 31 - 19 up after 48 minutes.
Grant Stewart was yellow carded shortly after but Jed held firm and kept the lead in his absence. Marr did narrow the lead with a try after 70 minutes from more sloppy Jed tackling. The game was sealed 5 minutes later after Gregor Young completed his hattrick of tries. The forwards had rumbled up to the Marr 22 and Danny Ritchie shipped the ball back across the pitch. Robbie Shirra-Gibb looked to have run out of space but offloaded to Lewis who in turn fed Gregor. He still had work to do but he beat a man and managed to reach out from the tackle to score to the left of the posts. Gregor was injured in the process of scoring with a nasty looking cut but hopefully no major damage. Mein converted. 38 - 26 with 5 minutes left.
Marr never threatened to spoil Jed's day after that, even with a lot of extra time and Jed even stretched the lead with a late Mein penalty. FT Jed 41 - 26 Marr.
